The DanceLoft Introduces Thursday Salsa Classes

Jehsel Lau, an accomplished instructor from Sinaloa, Mexico will joined the staff this month as an instructor of salsa.  Her salsa classes are tailor-made for beginners to provide a solid foundation of the technique and teach control of movement by means of dynamic exercises. The classes will also help the students to create their own style and sequences fallowing their musical instincts.  Partners are not necessary!  The class will be held Thursdays, from 6-7:30 pm beginning this week (Feb 21, 2008).

Jehsel LauJehsel began as instructor of Dance at the "School for Teachers of Artistic Education" of the SepyC (a Mexican Government Education Agency), and at the "School of Art Jose Limón" in Sinaloa, Mexico, where she also studied Ballet and Jazz.  As a performer, she received a scholarship from the University "Tecnologico de Monterrey", where she took classes in salsa with Hilda Rosas, a Cuban professor of Modern Dance and "Bailes de Salon" (Salsa, Merengue, etc.), and where she performed in several school performances and musical comedies.  (more)
Master Class with Nate Dryden
Improvisational Partnering

Exploring various movement partnerships in relation to and often in contact with one or several other dancers.  Students will engage in various movement studies to begin to create improvised partner dances around principles of listening, flow, spiraling, and weight sharing.

Nathan Dryden is an independent choreographer, teacher, performer, and aerialist currently living in Seattle WA.  He is a former member of the NEW ARTiculations and ZUZI dance companies of Tucson.  He is a certified instructor of the Skinner Releasing Technique and teaches SRT and Aerial Dance workshops around the world.  For the first part of 2008 he has been performing with The Gravity Project movement theatre company in Philadelphia, PA.  In March he will be setting new work on NEW ART  and performing with the ZUZI company.  Later in the year he will be teaching workshops in England, Turkey, and back in Seattle.

Schedule Updates:  Jazz/Theatre Dance, Tap, Children's Hip Hop, Belly Dance

Beginning this week we will offer a new schedule in order to (hopefully) better serve our students.  Jazz/Theatre Dance will be moving to Wednesdays from 8:15-9:15 pm.  Tap is cancelled for now but we will offer short term workshops in tap in the future.  Children's hip hop is being moved to earlier in the day:  11-11:45 for 4-6 year olds and 11:45-12:45 for 7-12 year olds.  Because the "all level" can either leave some students behind or be too slow for intermediate students, we begin offering two classes:  technique (Wed. 4:30-5:30 pm - beginning in March) and choreography (Wed.  5:30-6:30 pm).

FeldenWhat?  FREE Awareness Through Movement(R)Awareness Through Movement Classes Beginning in March
This week I am headed to San Diego for the next segment of my four year Feldenkrais(R) Method training.  Feldenkrais is a somatic method that harnesses the nervous system to achieve improved structural alignment and flexibility.  I discovered it several years ago at a workshop for dance teachers which was focused on training us on how to teach injury-free movement.  After easily releasing some long-term injuries, I was sold on the method and began my own training to become a practitioner.  This Fall I will be certified to teach Awareness Through Movement classes at the DanceLoft and I am looking forward to helping dancers move out of pain.

Beginning in March I will be offering a monthly FREE Awareness Through Movement class to DanceLoft students to help me practice my teaching skills of the method and to introduce it to anyone who's curious.  It is important to note that while I've had a year and a half of training, I will not yet be officially certified.  For local classes with certified practitioners or for more information about the method, please see the website www.tucsonfeldenkrais.com.

The first FREE class will be held Thursday, March 27th, from 5-6 pm.  Please email me at tammy@thedanceloft.com and let me know if you plan to attend.
