The DanceLoft celebrates its 4th Anniversary!
The story of
our humble beginnings (I know, we're still
pretty humble...
Four years ago my husband and I were
discussing our dreams for the future. As the
co-director of
NEW ARTiculations, a non-profit modern
dance performing company,
I lamented the struggle to find affordable
rehearsal space or a studio we could call
"home". I told him that what I really wished
was that a dance studio would make NEW ART
its resident company--a place where we could
teach and rehearse. My husband said, "Why
don't YOU just open a studio? How
hard could it be? You just schedule
classes, right?"

The Dedicated Dancer Challenge!
Gear up-- it's coming next
month!
Let's face it-- the best way to improve
your dancing is to really dedicate
yourself to taking classes. Next month,
The DanceLoft will be sponsoring the
"Dedicated Dancer" challenge. We
challenge you to make a commitment to
your dancing by taking THREE CLASSES PER
WEEK FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER--(or in
case you're planning a vacation over
Thanksgiving, a minimum of 12 classes
for the month). Buy an
unlimited monthly pass ($76) and accept
the Dedicated Dancer Challenge and if
you succeed, we'll extend your
pass by a week! That's a sweet
deal! We'll post your name and photo on
our Dedicated Dancer board (unless you
don't want us to) and track your
progress throughout the month so we can
give you the support and encouragement
you need.

Featured Class of the Month: Pilates!
What it is and what it can do
for you
Pilates is a series of exercises that
focuses on improving flexibility, strength,
balance and coordination. Joseph Pilates
developed the concepts and exercises over 90
years ago and called his work Contrology.
One of the main concepts is the initiation
of movement from the powerhouse or center of
the body. During his lifetime, Joseph
Pilates used the exercises to rehabilitate
patients in hospitals and as a method of
conditioning for performers and dancers.
Most recently, Pilates has gained popularity
in Hollywood and among professional athletes
from golfers to football players.
The reason dancers love Pilates is
because the exercises strengthen muscles
without bulking, creating long, lean muscles
and enabling greater ease of movement.
Julia Miller, the DanceLoft's
Pilates Instructor, has spent over 650
hours in Pilates teacher training
programs. As a modern dancer, she first
discovered Pilates for her own training
and recovery from injuries. To read her
full biography, click
